Irrigation & Agricultural Water Management

Practical knowledge for agriculture in arid and semi-arid regions

Dr. Carlos R. Orozco
Agricultural Scientist specializing in irrigation, evapotranspiration, soil salinity, drainage, and efficient agricultural water use.

Welcome

Efficient water management is essential for sustainable agricultural production, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions

This website brings together my professional experience, and practical information related to irrigation, crop water requirements, ET, soil salinity, drainage, and agricultural water management.

AREAS OF EXPERTISE

Areas of Expertise

Irrigation Management

Efficient planning, management, and use of irrigation water to support productive and sustainable agricultural systems.

Crop Evapotranspiration

Understanding crop water requirements and evapotranspiration to improve irrigation scheduling and water-use efficiency.

Soil Salinity

Understanding and managing soil salinity and its effects on crop production, soil health, and agricultural sustainability.

Agricultural Water Management

Applying scientific and practical approaches to improve the use and management of water in agricultural systems, particularly in arid and semi-arid environments.

Soil & Agricultural Drainage

Water movement through agricultural soils, drainage requirements, and the relationship between irrigation, drainage, salinity, and crop production.

Professional Background

About Dr. Carlos R. Orozco

Carlos R Orozco, is an authority in the use of innovative technologies to manage irrigation water and improve crop production. He has a Ph.D. in Agricultural Sciences from the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California, México, where he also earned honors while obtaining his degree as a Master of Science in Use and Management of Irrigation Water in Arid Regions. Carlos also holds a Bachelor Degree of Agricultural Engineering, majoring in Irrigation and Agricultural Drainage.

He has served in leadership positions in various Mexican and American companies related to irrigation and agricultural drainage, and been a consultant in the production of several crops, such forages, olives and wheat, among others.

In 1994 he began the Mexican operations of a U.S. company, and was a pioneer on the installation of a subsurface agricultural drainage system in Northwest and Central Mexico. His work solved the persistent problem of excess moisture and salinity in agricultural fields, increasing crop production. A pioneer in the use of this technology, he helped increase yields and crop production in other areas of Mexico as well. In this way started in Mexico the installation of this system, a process in which Carlos Orozco has had an important participation.

In 1997, the government of the State of Baja California, México, contracted for his services to implement a program to install a subsurface drainage system in the Mexicali Valley and to promote the efficient use of irrigation water in Baja California State.

Due to his academic training, he has applied existing technologies to create efficient use of water in the agricultural and urban sectors. In 2003 he planned and supervised the installation of an agricultural weather station network in Baja California to provide up-to-date weather information to farmers. Called the “Sistema de Información en el Manejo del Agua de Riego de Baja California” (SIMARBC), it operates similarly to the "California Irrigation Management Information System" (CIMIS), weather network in the State of California, US.

In public service from 2001 to 2007 and from 2015 to June 2016, he was Deputy Secretary at the Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock of Baja California. Twice he has been Director of Agriculture, as well as Director of Agricultural Irrigation Infrastructure.

In July 2016, he started to work at Imperial Irrigation District on the On-farm Water Conservation Program.

He has taken a significant number of graduate courses and seminars in Mexico and United States.
